For Mercy’s Sake

A ball of fur, a wiggling tail, comes running thru the door
Funny smells tickle the nose and make her run looking for more.
Tumbling head over heels, laughing till’ I ache
Don’t let her stop, for mercy’s sake.
Mercy, what a beautiful name for such a little thing
The lopsided smile, dark brown eyes, makes my heart sing.
Watching her grow over the years,
Helping me to conquer my fears.
Long walks thru beautiful parks
Loving the thrill of her life giving spark.
Age comes to all, some before their time
The ties that bind have made her mine.
I watch her walk, a slight stumble that’s all
When did this start, I don’t recall.
Her eyes seem faded, where did she go
Is she in pain, I need to know.
The doctor looks, his face is grim
I try so hard to hold the tears in
Her time is near, my mind is numb
A painful choice is about to come.
To live without the joy of my life
Causes such hurt, brings such strife
The decision is made to let her go
The best choice for her, that much I know.
A needle is placed to end her days
It hurts like hell in so many ways
I find the courage, I do what it takes
And I do it all for Mercy’s sake.
